For a factory that needs both electricity and heat, a gas engine is often the most efficient solution. The gas engines market supplies spark-ignited and dual-fuel engines that burn natural gas, biogas, or synthesis gas to drive a generator, producing electricity. The waste heat from the engine (exhaust, jacket water, and oil cooler) is recovered to produce hot water or steam for process heating, space heating, or absorption cooling. A combined heat and power (CHP) system can achieve total efficiencies that far exceed separate generation. For a food processing plant, a gas engine CHP provides both power and steam for cooking and sterilization. For a hospital, a gas engine provides backup power and heating. For a greenhouse, a gas engine produces CO₂ (from exhaust) for plant growth, as well as power and heat. For a remote mine, a gas engine running on associated gas (from oil production) provides power where grid connection is impossible.

The engineering of gas engines for power generation focuses on reliability, efficiency, and low emissions. The gas engines market offers engines from a few hundred kilowatts to many megawatts, with speeds typically 1,000 to 1,500 rpm for continuous duty. For a facility that operates 24/7, a gas engine designed for long intervals between overhauls is essential. For a site that needs to respond to grid price signals, an engine with fast start and load acceptance is required. For a facility in an urban area, an engine with sound-attenuated enclosure reduces noise. For a site with strict emissions limits, a lean-burn engine with a three-way catalyst or selective catalytic reduction (SCR) may be needed. For a plant using biogas (which contains siloxanes, hydrogen sulfide), the engine must have special materials and oil formulations to prevent corrosion and wear.

Looking toward the energy transition, the gas engines market is preparing for hydrogen. A gas engine can be modified to burn a mixture of natural gas and hydrogen, reducing carbon emissions. Some manufacturers offer engines with hydrogen-ready components (e.g., fuel system, ignition, valves) that can be upgraded as hydrogen becomes available. For a site with electrolyzers producing green hydrogen, a gas engine can burn that hydrogen to generate power during periods of low renewable generation. For a biogas plant, the engine already burns a renewable fuel; if the biogas is upgraded to biomethane, the engine is carbon-neutral. As the grid integrates more variable renewables, the demand for dispatchable, efficient gas engine power will grow. The gas engines market will provide the flexible, clean-burning prime movers that complement wind and solar.
