Why Hire a Certified Arborist Before Removing a Tree
Before you pick up a chainsaw or call the first contractor in the phone book, talk to a certified arborist. Tree removal looks simple from the outside, but a poor decision can cost you money, damage your property, or even put your safety at risk.
A certified arborist is trained to evaluate a tree's structural integrity, root health, and disease status before recommending removal. In many cases, what looks like a dying tree is actually salvageable with the right treatment, such as pruning, soil correction, or root collar excavation. Removing a healthy tree unnecessarily means losing shade, property value, and years of growth that can't be replaced overnight.
On the other hand, if a tree truly is hazardous, an arborist will identify the safest removal method, taking into account nearby structures, power lines, and the tree's lean and weight distribution. This reduces the risk of falling limbs, property damage, or injury during the job.
Certification also means the arborist follows industry standards set by organizations like the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). This isn't just a title; it reflects ongoing education in tree biology, risk assessment, and proper removal techniques.
Hiring an uncertified worker might save a little money upfront, but the risks often outweigh the savings. Improper cuts can damage surrounding trees, violate local ordinances, or leave hazardous stumps and root systems behind. If you're unsure whether your tree needs removal or can be saved, a certified arborist's assessment is the smartest first step. It protects your landscape, your wallet, and your peace of mind.
