As per MarkNtel Advisors, India’s steel sector was valued at around USD 140.5 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 150.50 billion in 2026 to nearly USD 227.38 billion by 2032, expanding at a CAGR of about 7.12% during 2026–2032. This growth is supported by building and construction demand, finished steel consumption, North India’s leading share, and rising infrastructure investment.

Infrastructure Development Supports Steel Consumption

Infrastructure remains one of the strongest demand areas for steel in India. Highways, metro rail systems, bridges, airports, ports, industrial corridors, logistics parks, and urban transit networks require large quantities of structural steel, reinforcement bars, plates, pipes, and fabricated components. Steel enables faster construction, longer asset life, and higher load-bearing capacity in complex projects.

The Ministry of Steel plays a central role in policy support, sector monitoring, and development of India’s steel ecosystem. Its focus on capacity expansion, raw material security, quality standards, and domestic production supports the country’s long-term industrial and infrastructure objectives.

Building and Construction Lead End Use

Building and construction account for the largest share of steel consumption in India. MarkNtel Advisors notes that this segment held about 63% share in 2026. Residential towers, commercial complexes, factories, warehouses, hospitals, schools, and public buildings use steel in reinforcement, beams, columns, roofing, façades, elevators, pipelines, and prefabricated structures.

The World Steel Association highlights construction as one of the largest steel-consuming sectors globally. Finished Steel Holds a Strong Position

Finished steel holds a significant position because it is ready for direct use in construction, fabrication, machinery, transportation, and industrial applications. According to MarkNtel Advisors, finished steel accounted for about 65% share by product type. Its demand reflects activity in reinforcement bars, structural sections, sheets, plates, coils, tubes, and specialized steel products.

Finished steel consumption is influenced by project execution, manufacturing output, construction cycles, and public capital expenditure. As more industries move toward value-added production, demand for high-quality, application-specific steel grades is expected to rise.

Transport and Manufacturing Add Momentum

India’s transport infrastructure and manufacturing sectors are adding further momentum to steel demand. Road development uses steel for bridges, crash barriers, reinforcement, culverts, and fabrication. Rail and metro systems require steel for tracks, coaches, stations, and support structures. Automotive and machinery production also depend on flat steel, alloy steel, and precision components.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways continues to support road and highway development across India. Such projects create recurring demand for steel across construction, safety systems, fabrication units, and heavy equipment supply chains.

Industrial Policy Strengthens Domestic Production

India’s manufacturing strategy is encouraging higher domestic value addition across steel-consuming industries. Steel demand is linked with capital goods, defense manufacturing, renewable energy equipment, automobiles, electrical machinery, and consumer durables. Strong domestic production helps reduce import dependence and supports supply stability for large projects.

The Make in India initiative supports manufacturing growth, investment, innovation, and industrial competitiveness. For the steel sector, this direction encourages capacity expansion, downstream fabrication, technology modernization, and stronger linkages with construction and engineering industries.

Decarbonization Becomes a Long-Term Priority

Steel production is energy-intensive, and environmental performance is becoming increasingly important. Indian producers are evaluating energy efficiency, scrap use, lower-emission processes, hydrogen-based routes, renewable power, and waste heat recovery. Cleaner production will become more relevant as global buyers and infrastructure developers place greater focus on sustainability.
