France Greenhouse Horticulture Expands as Controlled Farming Supports Fresh Produce Supply

France’s greenhouse horticulture sector is gaining importance as growers, retailers, policymakers, and food producers focus on reliable fresh produce supply. Greenhouses allow farmers to manage light, temperature, humidity, irrigation, and crop protection more precisely than open-field systems. This makes controlled cultivation increasingly useful as weather variability, labor constraints, water stress, and consumer demand for year-round fruits and vegetables reshape agricultural planning.

According to MarkNtel Advisors, the France Greenhouse Horticulture sector was valued at around USD 1.16 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 1.23 billion in 2026 to USD 1.76 billion by 2032. The sector is expected to grow steadily, registering a CAGR of 6.15% during 2026–2032, supported by demand for fresh produce, greenhouse modernization, glass structures, and smart farming adoption.

Fresh Produce Demand Is a Core Growth Driver

French consumers are placing more emphasis on quality, freshness, traceability, and locally available produce. Greenhouse horticulture helps address these expectations by supporting stable production of tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, leafy greens, fruits, nursery crops, flowers, and ornamentals. The report indicates that fruits and vegetables account for about 54% share in 2026, making them the leading crop type.

The European Commission supports agriculture and rural development across the EU, including farm competitiveness, sustainability, and food-system resilience. This wider policy environment influences France’s protected cultivation investments, particularly where growers seek higher productivity and stronger domestic supply.

Controlled Environments Improve Production Stability

Greenhouses reduce exposure to unpredictable weather, pests, excessive rainfall, wind, and seasonal limitations. By controlling growing conditions, producers can improve yield consistency, crop quality, and planting cycles. This is particularly important for high-value crops where appearance, shelf life, and uniformity strongly influence retail value.

The Food and Agriculture Organization recognizes protected cultivation as a method that can improve crop management under changing climate conditions. For France, these systems can help growers manage temperature changes, rainfall variability, and shorter outdoor production windows in certain regions.

Commercial growers often prefer glass where long-term productivity, crop quality, and controlled-environment performance justify higher upfront investment.

Plastic greenhouse structures also remain relevant, especially for lower-cost installations, flexible production units, and seasonal applications. The choice between glass and plastic depends on crop type, investment capacity, regional climate, expected operating life, and energy-management needs.

Regional Strength Is Visible in the Southeast

France’s southeast region plays an important role in greenhouse horticulture due to favorable climate conditions, horticultural expertise, and strong agricultural infrastructure. Areas such as Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes benefit from milder winters and higher solar radiation, which can reduce heating needs and support greenhouse vegetable production.

The French Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty provides national direction on agriculture, food systems, and rural policy. Such policy support matters as France works to strengthen domestic production, improve food sovereignty, and reduce dependence on imported fresh produce where possible.
