Keeping the Pressure on: Preventing Axle Failures on Railways

A derailment, which is one of the worst things that can happen in train operations, can be caused by an axle bearing that is too hot if it is not noticed in time. In order to determine the temperature of the bearings that are moving along each wheelset, a hot box detection system makes use of infrared sensors that are located along the trackside. Whenever the temperature of a bearing goes above a predetermined threshold, the system sends a notification to either the train driver or the control center, enabling them to take rapid action. Without a hot box detection system that is operational, a bearing that is running hot has the potential to seize, which could result in a fractured axle and a potential catastrophe.

How the Technology Works

Modern systems for finding hot boxes use pyrometers or thermal image cameras pointed at the bottom of moving trains. Each Hotbox Detector scans every bearing as the train rolls over the rail at line speed, typically between 50 and 120 kilometers per hour. The Hotbox Detector records the ambient temperature and compares each bearing's reading against the average of adjacent bearings on the same train. This relative measurement, rather than an absolute threshold, helps prevent false alarms during hot weather conditions.

Placement and Network Integration

For effective coverage, a hot box detection system is typically installed every 30 to 50 kilometers on high-speed rail lines and every 80 to 100 kilometers on freight corridors. Each hotbox detector location often includes wheel impact detectors and acoustic bearing monitoring systems as part of an integrated wayside monitoring station.

The hot box detection system can determine whether an overheated bearing is situated on the left or right side of a vehicle. This provides assistance to maintenance teams in locating and repairing the faulty component in a more expedient manner.

Final Thoughts

Breakdowns of bearings almost never occur without prior notice. In most cases, they reveal themselves through steadily rising temperatures long before a critical failure develops. A reliable hot box detection system captures these warning signs early enough to prevent derailments and major equipment damage. Every hotbox detector installed along a railway route acts as a silent guardian, monitoring thousands of bearings every day. By deploying a hot box detection system at appropriate intervals and maintaining each hot box detector carefully, rail operators can transform unexpected bearing failures into planned maintenance activities.
