Rockstar has finally given older GTA 5 players a reason to move on, and for a lot of people that means they can keep their progress while also buy GTA 5 Money on the side if they want to speed things up once they land on the newer version. From June 18, eligible PS4 owners and digital Xbox One owners can jump to the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S editions without paying again. It is the sort of change that has been asked for for a while, especially by players who never felt like buying the game twice.

Who actually gets the free upgrade?

The offer is aimed at a pretty specific group. If you own a PS4 copy of GTA 5, you are in. If you own the digital Xbox One version, you are in as well. Rockstar is also extending the upgrade to PC players who are still on the Legacy edition, letting them move to the Enhanced edition at no extra charge. That matters more than it sounds. A lot of players stayed put because their friends were there, or because they did not want to lose years of progress.

Will my Story Mode save and GTA Online character carry over?

Yes, and that is the part most players care about first. Story Mode progress can be transferred, and GTA Online characters can move over too. That means you do not have to start from scratch just because you are changing hardware. If you have spent months building up a character, buying properties, or just messing around with your crew, you can take that with you. It keeps the upgrade from feeling like a reset, which is usually the bit people hate.

The current-gen versions also bring the usual upgrades you would expect, but with a few extras that actually matter in play. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, players get access to Hao's Special Works, Career Progress rewards, and other features tied to the newer release. PC players moving to Enhanced get better visual options too, including ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination. It is not just a shinier menu. The game really does look and run differently.

Why is Rockstar doing this before the next GTA Online update?

The timing is no accident. Rockstar is lining this up before The Kortz Center Heist arrives in July. That update sends players into a new multi-stage job around the Kortz Center art gallery in Pacific Bluffs. You will apparently be able to buy an Art Studio add-on for Mansion properties, scout the target, and pick different approaches once the heist is in motion. If you have been stuck on an older console, the free upgrade gives you a clean way to move before that content drops.

There are also some short-term GTA Online perks running ahead of the update, including bonus GTA$ events, discount offers, and the Fine Art Collector program. GTA+ members get a hefty GTA$2,000,000 discount on Mansion properties, and there is also a 40% GTA$ bonus on Shark Card purchases for a limited time. If you are the kind of player who likes to plan ahead, this is probably the right window to make the switch. And if you later decide to buy GTA 5 Modded Accounts, just make sure you know exactly what you are getting into before you do anything else.
