How to Apply for BIS Certification
Applying for BIS Certification is a common requirement for manufacturers and brands seeking market access in India. The process begins by identifying the applicable Indian Standard (IS) for your product and confirming the correct conformity route—either the ISI Certification Scheme, which involves licensing and ongoing surveillance, or the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), primarily applicable to electronics and IT products. At this stage, it is advisable to create a clear scope table listing product models or variants, electrical or technical ratings, and safety-critical components, as this helps streamline testing and documentation.
Next, prepare a comprehensive application dossier. This typically includes product drawings and technical specifications, bill of materials (BOM) with safety-critical components, user manuals, conformity declarations, quality system records, and labeling or marking artwork that accurately references the applicable IS standard. Selecting a BIS-recognized laboratory with experience in your product category is essential. Finalize sample quantities, testing timelines, report formats, and confirm whether representative models can be used to cover related variants, where permitted by the standard.
While laboratory testing is in progress, complete the BIS application forms and supporting documents, arrange brand authorization if required, and—if the manufacturing unit is located outside India—appoint an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to coordinate with BIS. Under the CRS route, test reports and documents are submitted online through the BIS portal to obtain a Registration Number (R-number). Under the ISI Scheme, BIS conducts a factory inspection and requires the implementation of marking control procedures and ongoing surveillance.
Once certification is granted, strict adherence to BIS requirements is mandatory. Products must carry the correct BIS mark—either the ISI mark or the CRS R-number along with the IS reference—exactly as prescribed. Manufacturers must maintain compliance records for surveillance, monitor renewals, and promptly report any changes in product design, components, or suppliers.
