Arc Raiders Add 3 Strike Permaban System to Combat Cheaters

Arc Raiders, the extraction shooter from Embark Studios, just released its Headwinds update, introducing a new three-strike ban system aimed at cheaters. Announced on January 27, 2026, the system starts with a 30-day ban for first offenses, goes up to 60 days for a second strike, and ends with a permanent ban on the third. It's part of a larger anti-cheat effort addressing hacks, aimbots, and other exploits that have frustrated players in high-stakes raids, where dying can mean losing valuable gear. While the system isn't fully active yet, Embark says implementation is underway, and it's already generating debate among players on Reddit, Twitter, and gaming forums ARC Raiders Coins.

Some players feel the policy is too lenient, arguing that cheating in a PvPvE environment should be punished immediately. Comparisons to Escape from Tarkov's instant permabans are common, with critics saying repeat offenders shouldn't get two free passes to ruin games. Concerns include cheaters making new accounts during suspensions, undermining leaderboards, and affecting safe-stash runs in maps like Buried City. Embark appears to be balancing punishment with caution, trying to avoid punishing players by mistake due to anti-cheat errors or unstable connections.

Others support the tiered approach, noting that automated detection isn't perfect. Escalating penalties allow room for appeals before permanently locking accounts. Embark hasn't detailed the appeals process, but hints in the patch notes suggest there will be manual reviews for edge cases. The approach fits the studio's philosophy of iterative updates, similar to how content has rolled out from Headwinds through the upcoming Riven Tides update. Still, without visible bans or cheat-free leaderboards, some players worry the system won't be effective.

The anti-cheat changes arrive alongside other Headwinds updates, including new features like the Display Case for trophy hunting and Solos vs. Squads matchmaking for level 40+ players, adding rewards and challenges. Buried City's new Bird City condition punishes poor positioning, making exploits like no-clipping even more disruptive. Embark has also adjusted PvE threats, with tougher ARCs like giant spiders now less of a challenge for skilled players—but cheaters can shortcut these encounters, taking away progression from legitimate players. A more reliable system would make these updates feel more meaningful.

Implementation won't be simple. Tracking bans across hardware IDs, IPs, and accounts is required to stop players from avoiding punishment with new accounts. Games like Battlefield and Marvel Rivals have faced similar challenges, and failure to enforce bans effectively could invite criticism. Community reactions remain mixed, with heated discussions on Reddit and jokes about lag-switchers or self-banned accounts. How the system performs in practice—whether ban counts rise and reports drop—will determine if the approach works or needs stricter measures in future updates like Shrouded Sky.

For the wider extraction shooter community, this is an important move. Trust is essential in games where gear loss matters, and Arc Raiders' graduated approach contrasts with Tarkov's instant bans while echoing lighter systems in games like Hunt: Showdown. New players see this as a sign that Embark is serious about maintaining a fair environment, which could help retention. Veteran players, however, want proof that the system works, ideally through live statistics or dev updates showing detection improvements cheap ARC Raiders gear.

The three-strike policy is a test of Embark's approach to fair play. If enforced properly, it could create cleaner matches while giving borderline cheaters a chance to reform. If cheater sightings drop, it will allow Headwinds' new content to take center stage without being overshadowed by hacks. Either way, Embark has made it clear: the third strike will be permanent, and the studio is ready to enforce it.
