Battlestaves are essential, versatile weapons in Old School RuneScape (OSRS), beloved by magic users for their dual melee and magical bonuses. Unlike basic staves, they offer autocast capabilities and can be upgraded into elemental variants that provide unlimited runes of their type. Crafting a battlestaff is not only a great way to level up your Crafting and Magic skills but also a profitable endeavor for players looking to earn OSRS gold. This guide breaks down the process step by step, from meeting requirements to assembling your finished staff.

1. Understand the Requirements

Before you start crafting, ensure you meet the necessary skill and item requirements. Battlestaff crafting is a members-only activity, so you'll need an active membership to begin.

For basic battlestaffs, you need a Fletching level of 40. This allows you to carve a battlestaff from celastrus bark using a knife. If you plan to make elemental battlestaves (the most useful and profitable type), you'll need higher Crafting and Magic levels.

Elemental battlestaves have specific skill requirements: 54 Crafting and 56 Magic for water battlestaves, 58 Crafting and 60 Magic for earth, 62 Crafting and 63 Magic for fire, and 66 Crafting and 66 Magic for air battlestaves. You'll also need to wield the staff, which requires 30 Attack and 30 Magic.

2. Gather the Materials

The materials you need depend on whether you're making a basic battlestaff or an elemental one. Start with the core components, then add elemental materials for upgrades.

For a basic battlestaff: You'll need 1 celastrus bark and a knife. Celastrus bark can be obtained from celastrus trees, while a knife is easily bought from general stores or the Grand Exchange (GE).

For elemental battlestaves: You'll need a basic battlestaff (or purchase one directly), an unpowered orb, elemental runes (matching your desired element), and cosmic runes. Unpowered orbs are made from molten glass, which requires sand, soda ash, and a glass-blowing pipe.

You can also skip crafting the base by buying battlestaves from Zaff's Superior Staffs in Varrock (after completing the "What Lies Below" quest) for 1,000 coins each. Zaff stocks more staves if you've completed Varrock Diary tasks.

3. Craft the Base Battlestaff (Optional)

If you're making your own base instead of buying one, start with celastrus bark. Equip your knife, right-click the bark, and select "Fletch." This will turn the bark into a battlestaff, granting 80 Fletching experience.

This step is optionalmany players buy pre-made battlestaves from Zaff or the GE to save time, especially if Fletching isn't a priority.

4. Create an Elemental Orb

Elemental battlestaves require a charged elemental orb. First, make molten glass by combining sand and soda ash in a furnace. Soda ash is made by cooking seaweed on a range, and sand can be collected from beaches or bought from the GE.

Next, use a glass-blowing pipe on the molten glass to make an unpowered orb. Then, head to the corresponding elemental obelisk (e.g., air obelisk for air orbs) with the unpowered orb, 3 cosmic runes, and 30 elemental runes in your inventory.

Cast the "Charge Orb" spell (matching your element) on the obelisk. This will turn the unpowered orb into an elemental orb and grant Magic experience137.5 XP for air orbs, 125 XP for fire, 112.5 XP for earth, and 100 XP for water.

5. Assemble the Elemental Battlestaff

Once you have your battlestaff and elemental orb, assembling the final weapon is simple. Open your inventory, right-click the elemental orb, and select "Use" on the battlestaff.

This action will combine the two items into an elemental battlestaff, granting Crafting experience (matching the Magic XP from charging the orb). For example, attaching an air orb gives 137.5 Crafting XP.

6. Tips for Efficiency and Profit

To save inventory space, use an elemental staff (e.g., fire staff) when charging orbsthis eliminates the need to carry elemental runes. Lava battlestaves work for fire and earth orbs, while mud battlestaves work for water and earth orbs.

For profit, focus on air or fire battlestaves, as they often have the best GE margins. Buy materials in bulk from the RuneScape gold for sale, craft the staffs, and sell them for a steady profitup to 300k gold per day if you buy Zaff's full stock of staves.

You can also upgrade elemental battlestaves to mystic staves by paying Thor Mac (after completing "Scorpion Catcher") 40,000 coins (or less with Kandarin Diary completions) for even higher value.

Crafting battlestaves is a rewarding activity that combines skill progression and profit. With the right materials and a bit of practice, you'll be wielding powerful elemental battlestaves in no time, whether for combat, skilling, or gold-making in OSRS.
