In the sixth edition of one of the NHL's outdoor games, the Buffalo Sabres will be taking on the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game will be played in Hamilton, Ont. where Buffalo is going to be considered to be the host team. It's the third time the Sabres will be playing in an outdoor NHL game. The team previously played in two Winter Cla sics one being the inaugural event in 2008 and the second time in 2018. The Sabres lost both of those games. The NHL has never stated that the Heritage Cla sic is strictly for Canadian teams, however, the previous five events have all been played by teams from north of the border. When the NHL was coming up with a plan for the 2022 event, it elected to go with a "United States vs. Canada" route for the game. explained the thought proce s behind selecting the teams participating in this year's Heritage Cla sic. "I think the idea came pretty immediately when we realized the best bet here was to have the Buffalo Sabres play the Toronto Maple Leafs and, in along those lines, the U.S. against Canada. This is the sixth Heritage Cla sic we've had and the first time an American team will be part of it, so we asked, 'How do we play that theme all the way through?'" Buffalo is the closest team to the Canadian border and it's about a two-hour drive between the KeyBank Center in Buffalo and the Scotiabank Centre in Toronto.
