For an electric pump, a backup diesel pump is often required by code. Controllers include alarms for phase reversal, low suction pressure, or engine overspeed. Weekly testing (running the pump without flowing water) ensures mechanical readiness. Annual flow tests measure pressure and flow against the original design curve. For a building owner, maintaining the fire pump is a legal requirement; a pump that fails to start during a fire could lead to catastrophic loss. As building codes evolve, the fire pump market will continue providing the robust, reliable pumps that form the backbone of fire protection systems.
