How to Verify BIS Certification
Verifying BIS Certification is a common requirement for buyers, brands, importers, and manufacturers operating under Indian conformity regulations. The first step is to identify which certification scheme applies to the product—either the ISI Certification Scheme, which covers licensed products with factory surveillance, or the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS), applicable mainly to electronics and IT products. Also note the applicable Indian Standard (IS) mentioned on the product or its packaging.
To verify certification, collect the correct identifier:
· CM/L (license number) for ISI-marked products
· R-number (Registration Number) for CRS products
Along with this, keep the brand name and exact model or variant details ready. These identifiers are essential for an accurate search.
Visit the BIS/Manak online portal and use the Verify License or Verify Registration option. Enter the CM/L number or R-number and, if required, refine the search using the brand name or IS number. A valid BIS record will display details such as the licensee or manufacturer name, brand, model or catalogue reference, applicable IS standard, and certification status (active, suspended, or expired).
Once the record appears, carefully match the online information with the product label or packaging. Ensure the brand name, model number, and IS reference are identical. For CRS products, the R-number is usually printed on the label or packaging, while ISI-certified products must show the ISI mark along with the CM/L number.
If no record is found, recheck the entry for spelling errors or variations in model numbers, such as spaces or hyphens. If verification still fails, request a copy of the official BIS license or registration certificate from the manufacturer or seller. The presence of a mark alone is not valid proof unless it appears in the BIS database.
After verification, it is good practice to download or print the online result and keep it in your quality or compliance records, especially for audits, tenders, or regulatory inspections. Re-verification should also be done whenever new variants are introduced or when product components change, to ensure the existing BIS approval still applies.
