A Crile Hemostat is a surgical clamp primarily used to control bleeding by clamping blood vessels during surgery. Named after the American surgeon George Washington Crile, it’s one of the most widely used hemostats in surgical procedures.


Design and Features

  • Material: Typically made from stainless steel, allowing sterilization and durability.

  • Shape: Straight or curved jaws; the curved version is often used for deeper areas.

  • Teeth/Serations: The jaws are finely serrated to grip vessels or tissues securely.

Uses of Crile Hemostat

  3. Dissecting Tissue Planes:

    • Can be used to separate tissues carefully in minor procedures.

Types of Crile Hemostats

  1. Straight Crile Hemostat:

    • Ideal for superficial vessels or tissues.

  2. Curved Crile Hemostat:

    • Perfect for deeper surgical sites, allowing better access and visibility.

  3. Locking Hemostat (Standard Crile):

    • Has the ratchet mechanism to hold the clamp firmly.
