The average output voltage depends on the duty cycle, which is the ratio of ON time to the total switching period.

where D is the duty cycle (0 < D < 1).

Modes of Operation

A step down chopper operates mainly in two modes:

1. Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM)

  • Load current flows continuously.

  • Common in high-power applications.

  • Produces smoother output voltage.

2. Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM)

  • Load current falls to zero for part of the cycle.

  • Occurs at light loads.

  • Control becomes more complex compared to CCM.
