How a Home Battery Backup System Can Actually Save You Money

Stop right there; you’re thinking that something as complex (and as big of an investment) as a home battery backup system can’t possibly save you money. It is an expense, after all, right?

Not entirely. While it is true that high-end, modern home battery backup systems (such as those for solar systems) do indeed command high sticker prices, looking at them solely as an expense does not paint a fair picture.

In fact, despite the startup investment and installation costs, the case is very likely that a battery backup system for your home will actually save you money in the long run.

1. You get to use all of the energy your system produces

Regardless of whatever supplementary energy system your home has, you’ll get to store and use all of your energy when you have a home battery backup.

Without a battery backup, any surplus energy produced is either wasted (if you aren’t tied to the grid) or shuttled back into the grid (if you are grid-tied). But either way, without the backup, you lose the advantage of any other surplus energy produced.

You’ve invested in a backup energy solution; not getting to use all of the energy produced is leaving money on the table.

2. You get to use energy during non-peak hours

Similar to the first point, if you are not grid-tied, you won’t be able to use energy during non-peak hours if you don’t have a battery backup system.

Any home that isn’t tied to the grid will not have any access to energy when the system isn’t producing it unless there is a battery energy storage system.

Once again, you’re losing money if you don’t have some way to capture all the energy the system produces.

3. For grid-tied systems, you can skirt peak pricing

This one applies to grid-tied systems. Sometimes utility companies charge higher rates during high periods of consumption, such as during the nighttime or during storms. With a battery backup system, you can either charge the system from the grid during non-peak hours, or use your alternative energy system to charge the battery backup.

Either way, not relying on the grid during times that the utility company will gouge you is a good advantage to have and can definitely save you money in the long run.

4. You’ll be immune to blackouts

With a home battery backup, as long as it’s properly charged and maintained, you’ll be more or less free and clear as far as blackouts are concerned. You won’t be reliant on the grid with a battery backup system, and with an alternative energy system like a solar energy system, if it’s backed up by a battery storage solution, you won’t have that issue either.

5. Your home will be worth more money in the end

Lastly, this is one that doesn’t get counted nearly enough when it comes to a home battery backup system paying for itself. While the up-front costs can indeed be high, the resale value of a home with an independent energy storage solution will invariably be higher. In theory, the system could even pay for itself multiple times over, depending on what other systems are sold in conjunction with the house (such as a solar energy system or wind turbine generators).
